CompUSA - The Final Days

So, as you may know, CompUSA is going out of business. While several stores are being bought by TigerDirect, many are just closing out. This is true of a location here in Nashville, where we've spent three evenings in the past few weeks.

We've come out with a 16gb iPod Touch (15% off), a MacBook (10% off), and another MacBook (15% off!). That's a lot of savings, and a lot of purchases, all sadly none of which are commissionable to CompUSA's remaining employees.

Tonight we walked right up to the computer section, already having decided to get a second MacBook. This could've been a two minute transaction, but we ended up hanging around the store for 20+ minutes waiting for someone to help us.

I know they're about to be laid off and they've probably dealt with a lot of crap lately, but they're still on the clock. The below pictures were captured tonight on my phone (apologies for the quality), but are pretty hilarious examples of what's going on there in these, the final days.

Here's a shot of one employee playing some game. I can't tell what it is, but definitely some high end FPS judging by his choice of computer. We stood 10 feet from him for at least 10-15 minutes and he didn't move the whole time, except to make a call on his cell phone.

Here's an employee who spent at least 15 minutes talking to a friend while surfing online for concert tickets to rap shows. They looked our way numerous times, and even ignored a customer (pictured) who kept inching closer on different computers.

Pretty amazing right? As it turns out, this guy in the last picture was a manager. When I found someone else who would actually look me in the eye, this guy was called over to unlock the computer case. Only... oops! Where did those darn keys go?

5 minutes later he found them, dangling from a display two feet from where I stood. I could've easily grabbed them and made off with the computer I stood waiting for, had I noticed them.

We weren't upset because we got good deals on our items, but what an interesting way to close out the store. Anybody else finding a good deal there? We basically got out tax-free, which is about as good as we expected.

you know, the experience depicted here isn't all that far off from the "high level" of service I've received from CompUSA for the last few years... not entirely surprised at the whole 'going out of business' thing.

The last guy isn't a manager. I know, because I work there. He just happened to have the keys at the time.

Maybe that's WHY they're going out of business, as Mr. Burnshead noted.

The FPS is Halo, or so it would seem. Doesn't appear to be Halo 2, as there's a health bar.

Additionally, the commission program ended on 02/09 - make sure if you are going to fuss, you get your facts straight!

That's not just them. This could have easily been my last experience with Best Buy in Canada.
Hey Cambie Street Store, step up the IQ level/sociability of your staff and I may even one day buy something there.

The company is going out of business .... The people are losing their jobs ... you are shocked by what you see. Get over it.
